Portland CircleSong Workshop

Location: Vox Academy, Portland  map
Dates:      Saturday & Sunday, July 25 & 26, 2015

CircleSinging and Musical Fluency: 20/20

….for solo singers, choral singers, instrumentalists, music teachers and conductors.

This workshop is called “20/20” because it will help you see music clearly. It is designed to help you visualize and understand music structures as you’re creating them in real time, through the process of CircleSinging. Music theory knowledge is not required for this workshop. On the contrary, this is a new approach to music theory. It draws upon our most valuable possession as musicians: our ears. This method takes the grooves and chord progressions we’ve heard our whole lives and teaches us how to build them, step-by-step.

Over the course of two days, we will:

1) Build grooves in every meter
2) Build chords and chord progressions
3) Build melodic shapes
4) Integrate these grooves, chords and melodies to create CircleSongs.

The goal for the weekend will be for each singer to build any kind of groove over 20 different chords/chord progressions.

This workshop will include “group time” (all of us singing together) and “loop time” (individual practice time with the audio loops and your music player).
During the “loop time” Roger will visit with each singer and help them with the exercises. For this reason, we’re limiting the workshop
to twenty participants.

Materials will include 20 downloadable audio loops and a syllabus with 20 circle songs that integrate the rhythmic patterns and chord progressions we’ll be learning.  Upon registering you will receive audio loops* and written materials that will prepare you for the workshop. You’ll need an IOS/Android device, laptop or CD player to participate in this workshop.

*Playable on your IOS or Android device and in i-tunes.

This workshop would be good experience for those who…
  • are good/experienced choral singers
  • are good/experienced soloists who also enjoy singing in a choral setting
  • are interested in improvisation
  • teach and/or conduct, and want to integrate CircleSinging into their classroom or rehearsal room
  • want to become a better musician
  • those who are good part singers and would enjoy a day of singing some really interesting, engaging, challenging CircleSongs.

Perhaps the best choral writer of his generation.
MARK MURPHY

CircleSongs: The Method will undoubtedly be the most innovative book of the 21st century for musicians who want to learn everything there is to know about contemporary group vocal improvisation. There is no better facilitator than master arranger/composer Roger Treece who brilliantly exemplifies his rhythmic, melodic and harmonic ideas in a comprehensive book that will take you on an awe-inspiring musical and spiritual journey.

BOB STOLOFF, author of 'Scat!'

A veritable symphony of voices... complex, cascading vocal arrangements creating expansive layers of sound.
PEOPLE MAGAZINE

Absolutely impressive . . . I’m awed by the intricacy, seamless beauty and aural-spatial scope of sumptuous vocal choir pieces written by Roger Treece.
PAUL DeBARROS, DOWNBEAT

Genius, plain and simple.  Roger Treece is out of control!
